Wild Clay Vessels

These objects are made from pure wild clays from Aotea (Great Barrier Island).  I take great care in identifying, collecting and testing wild clay suitable for transforming into vessels.  I only collects from sites already altered by human intervention, like road cuttings, tracks and cut drains.  I acknowledge the preciousness of the clays I find, and recognise the importance of my collection sites to local iwi, Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai ki Aotea.
Each selected clay is collected only in small quantities, out of respect for a resource that is millions of years old and is finite in nature. The pricing reflects the work involved in locating, collecting, testing and processing the clay for use, as well as the value of the material itself, its whakapapa, and the finite nature of its supply - a metaphor for how we should be treating all "resources".
